Know Your Rights!
Its a sad fact that the majority of people do now know their basic constitutional rights. I am going put together a resource here for your basic rights and what the police can and cannot do.
Just Cause Law Website: Here is an excellent website which deals specifically with your rights as they relate to encounters with the police. I suggest everyone read it if possible.
1st AMENDMENT: 'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.'
In regards to police, this means you have the right to verbally oppose or verbally challenge a police officer without the fear of being arrested. Therefore if they tell you to shut up or that you will be arrested for verbally challenging them, they are wrong. See; The Supreme Court in City of Houston, Texas v. Hill, 482 U.S. 451
2nd AMENDMENT: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Not much here which needs explaining...
3rd AMENDMENT: No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
Again, not very applicable here.
4th AMENDMENT: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
This is probably the single most important Amendment when discussing police behavior. Here are some great links which discuss the 4th Amendment and its relation to police behavior.
